Garden Inspiration and color

Despite the heat, the garden looks pretty great.  Part of the reason is that I have been determined to have a fairly xeric garden.  There are loads of things that thrive in this brutal heat.  Why fight it?
One wonderful discovery is the nest just outside the front porch.   I have only caught fleeting glimpses of the female, but finally learned that I have a Northern Cardinal nest.  She is very shy, and the nest is quite well concealed. It would have escaped my attention except that I startled her off the nest late at night when I took the dog out.

  1. Looks like you have an orphan egg in the nest. Several species of birds lay their eggs in other birds' nests. Any idea what this one is?

  2. Hi Karen,
I thought the same thing, but if you look at some images of Cardinal nests, this seems to be a common trait. The eggs are all a tinted green, but only one has no speckles. Go figure!
